Every year since 2009 Refugee Law Project (RLP) has organized an Annual Sexual and Gender Based Violence and Persecution Awareness Week. Coordinated by our own Gender and Sexuality Program. The week generates advocacy, dialogue and awareness on pertinent SGBVP and related gender and sexuality issues in forced migration and refugee situations.
In 2013 refugee leaders of the support groups affiliated to RLP proposed and decided on the theme “From Sexual Violence in Conflict to Domestic Violence in Peace”. This resonated with our daily work with a wide range of forced migrants.
For the first time, the activities of the week extended to the RLP’s field offices and various refugee communities in and outside Kampala. In addition to the official opening of our new field offices in Mbarara and Hoima, we reached thousands of refugees in Nakivale and Kyangwali refugee settlement in Isingiro and Hoima districts respectively. Activities were also extended to Gulu, Kitgum, Kotido (office currently closed), Hoima and Mbarara.
We are pleased now to share with you the attached report for the 5th Annual Sexual Gender Based Violence and Persecution Awareness Week.
